Professor David Wood is Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International (DVCI), at Curtin University with a portfolio that includes: international relations; marketing, recruitment and admissions; transnational education through branch campuses and partnerships; study abroad and exchange; international scholarships; and quality. Curtin University is Australia’s seventh largest provider of International onshore education and its second largest offshore provider with programs in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Sarawak, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

David travels extensively establishing relationships with universities, government agencies and alumni and has developed articulation agreements with universities in China, Vietnam and India. Recently, David’s contribution to international education was recognised by the Vietnamese Government which awarded him the Medal for Educational Achievements (Ky niem chuong Vi su nghiep giao duc). The award is Vietnam’s most prestigious education honour and was presented in recognition of his work with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Training Centre (SEAMEO RETRAC) in course development and delivery.

From 2006 to 2009, David was Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) of Curtin University’s Faculty of Humanities which remains the centre for his research activities. David enjoys an international reputation as a researcher; his primary research interest being sustainable development in remote regions. He leads a $10 million CSIRO Flagship research project examining adaptation to climate change in Australia’s coastal zone and recently completed a $3million CSIRO Flagship-Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre research project examining the socio-economic impacts of tourism at Ningaloo.

MR MIKE RYAN

Mr Ryan holds two undergraduate and three postgraduate degrees in the arts and education and has been involved in international education for more than 25 years delivering, writing, managing and marketing academic programs for the higher education, VET, Schools, Study Abroad and ELICOS sectors.

Among other things, he has been a School Principal, an author, a College Director, managed university MBA programs, helped establish greenfields colleges in the private sector in Australia, tutored undergraduates at university and worked offshore as a country market manager.

Mr Ryan, who has been Executive Director of Perth Education City since 2004, is a regular commentator and contributor in the media in Australia and overseas. He is also a regular chair or speaker at conferences on international education, including at the OACAC Conference in Los Angeles in 2008, the APAIE conferences on the Gold Coast in 2010 and in Taipei in 2011 and at the ATEM, CISWA and IBLF conferences in Perth in 2010.

In the January 2010 Australia Day Awards, he was awarded the City of Perth Premier’s Australia Day Award for Active Citizenship for his work in raising the profile of Western Australian international education in Australia and overseas.

MR JOHN PAXTON

John Paxton has been involved in education since 1975, first as an English and Social Science teacher in Perth’s private secondary colleges.

After some years of travelling and working in Europe, he moved into school administration as Director of Development at Aquinas College, and then onto the same position at St Mark’s International College in 1995.

In recent years, he was part-owner and Director of ILA Perth, now Kaplan Aspect, and is currently co-owner and Managing Director of Perth International College of English (PICE).

He has been Chair or Vice-Chair of WAPETIA (Western Australia Private Education and Training Industry Association) for the past nine years.
