  Primary and secondary education

Western Australian schools boast world class educational facilities and high teaching standards, providing an ideal environment to achieve academic success and secure your child’s future.

The Western Australian schooling system consists of:

  • Government primary and secondary schools
  • Private primary and secondary schools
  • Co-educational and boys/girls schools
  • Private schools with on-campus boarding facilities

All Western Australian schools offer:

  • Libraries with an extensive book collection
  • Purpose designed music and art studios
  • Excellent sporting and recreational facilities
  • A variety of extra-curricular activities
  • Consideration for students’ dietary requirements and religion
  • Student support services

Secondary schools also provide fully-equipped science laboratories, multimedia resources and study areas.

The academic year starts in early February and finishes in December. It’s divided into two semesters, with two terms in each semester.

Western Australian and Australian government legislation ensures high educational standards and quality premises for your child. The educational programmes in all schools are monitored and regularly evaluated through testing programmes.

  Years 1-7

Primary education starts at six years of age and consists of Years 1-7. Students will usually have one teacher for most of the school day and specialist teachers for subjects such as music, art, drama and religious studies.

The primary school curriculum integrates skills, knowledge and understanding in eight learning areas:

  • English/Literacy
  • Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Science
  • Technology and Enterprise
  • Arts
  • Society and Environment
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Languages other than English (LOTE)

  Years 8-12

The curriculum of lower secondary schools (Years 8-10) is also based on the eight learning areas, but there is a lot more diversity and students can choose their subjects from a wide range of electives.

In upper secondary school (Years 11-12), your child can choose to study subjects that will help them with their future study or career. During the last two years of secondary school, students develop a more detailed theoretical knowledge and understanding of each chosen subject.

The students are taught by different teachers with specialist qualifications in their subject areas.

Western Australia’s Year 12 qualification is known as the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Your child can elect to sit for the Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE). Their Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) is based upon school assessment and their TEE results. Depending on your child’s TER score, they can access universities and colleges both in Australia and overseas.

  Our primary and secondary schools

Hi! My name is Hong Quan Nguyen.

I’m from Can Tho City in Vietnam and I’m currently doing my Masters in Journalism in Perth.

After I finished my bachelor degree in Vietnam I wanted to continue my studies overseas to gain an international experience.

I spoke to a counsellor and I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from Can Tho 150 Project.

He encouraged me to come to Perth as he had visited Perth before and thought it was a great city.

I like studying in Perth. I like the campus; it’s very modern and open. Also the facilities are very good.

I’m very happy with the quality of education.
