HERNIWATY BINTE HUSNI, Postgraduate ambassador

For achieving the highest average academic score as an Postgraduate international student in Perth
Herniwaty is from Singapore and has been studying a Master of Arts (Development Studies) in Perth for two years. In 2007 she received the Oxfam Australia Prize for International Sustainable Development – an achievement that has made her investments into Postgraduate studies worthwhile.
She is a member of the WA Marathon Club, where she has been able to indulge in her passion for long distance running. This passion led her to volunteer as part of the administration team for this year’s Perth Marathon.
Herniwaty is currently working part-time with a local member of parliament. With last weekend’s election, she had the great opportunity to participate in the campaign by coordinating communication pieces to the electorate, scrutineering at a mobile election centre and performing as a polling booth captain on Election Day.
XIAN FANG LOU, Undergraduate ambassador

For achieving the highest average academic score as an Undergraduate international student in Perth
Xian is from Singapore and has been studying her Bachelor of Science degree in Perth since 2004. She has received an impressive collection of awards, the most recent being the Water Corporation Prize for Water Conservation and Auditing and the Murdoch University Environmental Science Honours Scholarship.
Xian volunteers in environmental restoration, which offers her some practical experience towards her degree. She has worked both as a university tutor and chemistry lab demonstrator – enjoying the interaction with students and helping them as much as possible to excel in their coursework.
This busy young woman is also part of a network of pen-pals who exchange email in order to improve their English language as well as to learn more about the cultures of different countries.
LYE SEE YEN, Diploma ambassador

For being the highest achieving Diploma international student in Perth
See Yen is from Malaysia and is in the fourth semester of her Diploma of Commerce. She has received several Certificates of Excellence for achieving the highest marks in her units for each semester whilst she has been studying in Perth.
She is also an active member of the student council at her college. She provides ideas for student events and is responsible for writing news-related articles for the council.
See Yen received an Award of Excellence for her participation in the Volks Inc (Japan) Super Dollfie Costume Design competition in June this year. She hopes to continue developing her skills in this area by enrolling in a degree for fashion and design after she has completed her Diploma.
KARN AIKWANICH, Year 12 ambassador

For achieving the highest average academic score as a Year 12 or Foundation Year international student in Perth
Karn is from Thailand and has been studying in Perth for three years.
He is making the most of his time in Australia to personally develop and make new friends by being involved in his school’s badminton and tennis team, volunteering for ‘Men of the Trees’, as well as using a 3D software program to design a Formula 1 car for Swan TAFE’s F1 Car Competition.
In August this year, he was elected a member of the Senior Division of the Academic Honour Society at his school. He shared this with only six other students from a cohort of one hundred young men. Karn was the only international student to attain this distinction… he is certainly a fine ambassador for his homeland!
KERSTIN GREISSING, ELICOS Teacher ambassador

For providing outstanding teaching, as well as a high level of support and enthusiasm towards the welfare and overall experience of ELICOS students in Perth
Kerstin is originally from Germany and only learnt English as an adult. As a result, she has the ability to see from the students’ perspective because she was in their shoes only ten years ago! She recently became an IELTS examiner – an accomplishment she is very proud of.
Kerstin is also a keen photographer who travels overseas twice a year to take pictures of people which show their diverse lifestyles. Her work has been published in The Sunday Times Newspaper in both the travel and news sections.
This overseas experience, combined with her extensive class preparation, spontaneity and humour has been invaluable to help Kerstin teach ELICOS students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
