Sister city relationships

Sister City relationships allow us to exchange ideas, gain an international perspective and increase our understanding of global issues.

In addition to encouraging international peace and goodwill, many Sister City relationships lead to economic growth, increased tourism and successful business contacts. Perth's sister cities are:

  • Kagoshima (Japan) established in 1974
  • Megisti (Greece) established in 1984
  • Rhodes (Greece) established in 1984
  • Houston (Texas) established in 1984
  • San Diego (California, USA) established in 1987
  • Vasto (Italy) established in 1989 
  • Nanjing (China) established in 1998
  • Taipei (Taiwan) established in 1999

Charters of Mutual Friendship are less formal agreements than Sister City agreements. Perth has a Charter of Mutual Friendship with the following cities:

  • Perth (Scotland) established in 2006
  • Seocho City (South Korea) established in 2008

Sister state relationships

Western Australia has a number of strong international links nurtured through Sister State relationships. These relationships focus on trade, investment and knowledge exchange. Western Australia’s sister states are the:

  • Hyogo Prefecture (Japan) established in 1981
  • Zhejiang Province (China) established in 1987
  • Province of East Java (Indonesia) established in 1990
  • Tuscany Region (Italy) established in 1999
